This Application Note showcases the results of the vibration measurements obtained with Ommatidia´s Q2 multiple beam Laser Doppler vibrometer, during a concrete slab impact test.

The equipment used for the test is the Ommatidia Q2 Laser Doppler vibrometer based on FMCW Laser RADAR Technology (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave).
The Q2 system has two operating modes:
• Laser Doppler vibrometer mode: measures the velocity or displacement of a surface, without contact.
• Metrology mode: measures the distance to the sensor and generates a point cloud.
The system features multichannel coherent detection, of 65 simultaneous laser beams for signal acquisition.
And, performs a full-field of view measurement by scanning the azimuthal angel of the sensor head.
Thanks to the use of a dedicated photonic integrated circuit (PICs), the Q2 analyzes multiple optical channels in parallel, enabling the simultaneous three-dimensional measurement of vibrations and displacements.

What test does the application note describe?
Ommatidia’s first-party application note describes a hammer impact on a concrete slab at the Institute of Structural Mechanics, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, with Q2 measuring the resulting surface response. The university’s public procurement record separately records an academic Q2 Laser RADAR licence awarded in February 2026.
Which measurements were simultaneous?
Q2 acquired 65 optical line-of-sight velocity channels simultaneously in each frame. A wider spatial map was assembled by scanning the sensor head across additional azimuth positions. Points from different scan positions were not all captured at the same instant, so excitation repeatability and reference timing matter.
What can a hammer-impact response establish about the slab?
It can reveal measured time histories, spectra and spatial response under the documented excitation.
